Like Who Needs Speech Therapy?

Like Who Needs Speech Therapy?

Grammar and English traditionalists are annoyed at the continued and even growing use of the word like. Our goal at Central Valley Speech Therapy is to help people with language. We teach our patients the skills to become better speakers and listeners, so they can communicate and interact more effectively in the world without saying the word like constantly and incorrectly. Every patient is unique and we will strive to help each person reach his or her highest potential in communication.

Our approach is quality-centered therapy. Our caseloads are kept low to provide you with an individualized program that is tailored to your communication improvement needs. We keep current with the latest therapy techniques and research. We utilize video, conversation and creative materials to discourage the like problem. You will be encouraged to join in during therapy and homework practice. You will not use like incorrectly again.

Who Needs Like Speech Therapy?

Many teenagers see speech therapists. It is a great way to learn to speak more clearly and concisely. Sometimes a young adult has a medical condition that makes speaking and conveying thoughts more difficult. Each instance of like mitigates the impact of the following phrase or word. It is the stutter-step that indicates the speaker's insecurity in the use of a word or thought. Though the meaning of a sentence might not change with the like addition, its tone certainly does. It often precedes the “big words” or important concepts in a sentence, and allows the speaker to, like, fudge their usage slightly. When like is used to introduce a quote, as in “He was like, 'are you, like, busy?' And, I was all like, 'no, why,” it indicates a need for speech therapy.

The word like has ubiquitous usage in the English language; as a noun, a verb, a preposition, an adjective, and as a conjunction. As a preposition used in comparisons, like is one of the words in the English language that can introduce a simile: He eats like a pig, or she has a toy like his. Like can be used as a noun meaning "preference" or "kind." As an adjective, similar, comparable, to inform are descriptions. Like can also be used as a verb, to enjoy, to want, or to chose. Like can be used to express a feeling of attraction; weaker than love and distinct from it. In the case of a choice, this is also called preference: “I like her, they like me, and I like kissing.” As a conjunction, in the same way that like is often used in place of the subordinating conjunction as or as if: “She acts like a boy does, he acts as a girl does, they look like they don't want to go home, and they look as if they want to go find a room together.” These are some common and correct usages for the term like. I like them.

What is it Like?

The first time a young adult visits one of our speech therapists, he or she will take a speaking test. Don't worry! It is not a test you would take in school, which will affect your grades. This test is a way of finding out what type of speech problems a patient has. An example would be the “whatnot” affliction, the “you know” problem, and the “you know what I am saying” circumstance that are commonly tested for. If these speech problems are present, extra medication can be prescribed (Note that illegal substances are discouraged in our clinic). The patient will be asked to say certain sounds and words. These may be recorded and the therapist will record this information as the person takes the test. The test will help the therapist figure out the patients needs and decide what treatment methods would work best. What is interesting to our therapists is how completely oblivious the like users are to its pervasiveness. We can fix it, if you are willing.

Treatment

The “treatment” for speech problems is practice. If a patient has trouble with articulation or fluency, or just says like more often than food, the therapist will spend time showing the unique individual how to make a proper sentence using the correct verbiage or pronunciation. The therapist will demonstrate the sounds and ask the patient to copy with examples and positive reinforcement. Chocolate is often used as a reward to praise the patient. We have found this method unique to the like recovery process. Examples used are a means of copying the way the therapist moves the lips, mouth, and tongue to create the right sentence without the improper use of the word.

Central Valley Speech Therapy is a fully equipped speech clinic offering a comfortable environment for you or your young adult. As discussed, our clinic can quickly and completely rid you of several speech-related afflictions such as the like in your favorite discussion. Our center will make you and your progeny better to live with, provide you with better communication and happiness, and a conversation with friends and family will be unquestionably more pleasant.
