Happy New Year

Happy New Year from the Middle East.  I am sitting here recalling all the activities I have accomplished in 2011; Training for this deployment, all the miles traveled to and from, the Central Valley, home station, Fort Hunter Liggett, and mob station in Texas;  All the quality time with my family and friends; and hopefully stronger and wiser as the year comes to a close.  With this deployment, I have had the opportunity to meet some outstanding soldiers, who are now friends.  I am also thankful that this deployment is coming to a close rapidly.  I am proud to be an American.  So with that, let's bring in the New Year and start some new activities.

Nighttime Christmas Tree

Christmas at Night in Kuwait

This puts the U.S. national debt in perspective:

• U.S. tax revenue: $2,170,000,000,000
• Federal budget: $3,820,000,000,000
• Current deficit: $1,650,000,000,000
• National debt: $14,271,000,000,000
• Budget cuts: $38,500,000,000
Now, let's remove 8 zeros and pretend it's a household budget:
• Annual family income: $21,700
• Money the family spent: $38,200
• Additional charges on the credit card: $16,500
• Current credit-card balance: $142,710
• Budget cuts: $385

On the Ground the Secret War in Vietnam

On the Ground the Secret War in Vietnam [Hardcover]
John Stryker Meyer, John E Peters

After reading John’s second book, “Across the Fence” a follow-up to “On the Ground”, I had to read this one also. This one is very similar and is also about secret missions in Laos and Vietnam. Meyer and Peters tell it as it happened, no nonsense and no frills, and a fair portion of this book, contains the stories of other warriors such as Eldon Bargewell and Jim Lamotte. They go into detail about the sapper attack on FOB 4 Dah Nag on August 23, 1968, more so than any other book I have read. The author's treatment of these situations strikes me as very objective. Mr. Meyer's personal accounts are unembellished, and he tells it as he experienced it, without undue introspection as with some combat autobiographies. To Mr. Meyer and Mr. Peters- thank you for service, bravery, sacrifices, and for sharing your experiences with another generation. I give both of these books five stars. You won’t be able to put it down!
